Endometriosis. Surgical treatment.
As it’s already known, endometriosis is a chronic disease of younger patients. It causes the appearance of some pain that changes the lifestyle of the patients, pains that appear initially during menstruation, and then persist.
In other cases, patients get to the specialist because of fertility problems – the link between endometriosis and infertility is well known.
The main cause of pain caused by endometriosis is local pelvic inflammation; this occurs due to the discharge of inflammatory chemical mediators (chemicals that lead to aggression of the body) from ovarian outbreaks / nodules / endometriomas. Local inflammation results in healing with ‘scars’ – intraabdominal adhesions between the adjacent organs: uterus, ovaries, uterine tube, digestive structures (sigmoid colon, rectum, small bowel), bladder, both ureters.
As a postoperative prevention of recurrence of adherent processes, various substances (generally based on hyaluronic acid) may be used; they significantly reduce postoperative inflammation and thus the risk of postoperative adhesions, resulting in a reduction in chronic pain at a distance.
Even in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic surgery), especially in extensive surgery, such as those for severe endometriosis or interventions in the oncological sphere, the risk of post-operative adhesions is not to be neglected; that is why we use, when we consider necessary, substances that reduce these phenomena.
